Minas Gerais TRE unanimously overturns mayor Bilim's election ban for economic abuse, stemming from R$800k+ in 2024 agricultural fair spending.

Brazilian Mayor's Election Ban Overturned: TRE Reverses 2024 RulingIn a significant legal reversal, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) of Minas Gerais has unanimously overturned the cassation (removal from office) of Jucelio Fernandes de Oliveira, known as Bilim, the mayor of Chácara. The decision also applies to his vice-mayor, Marcelo Fernandes de Freitas.

The original cassation was based on charges of abuse of economic and political power during the 2024 municipal elections. The case centered on the 2024 Agricultural Exposition (Exposição Agropecuária), where the administration invested over R$800,000 in musical performances, tractor exhibitions, and speeches that praised the incumbent government's management.

However, the TRE's appeal ruling, decided by a 6-0 vote, suspended the cassation. The court maintained only a fine for irregular publicity, amounting to approximately R$5,000, based on the outdated UFIR monetary unit.

Mayor Bilim, affiliated with the PSB party, commented on the decision via his social media channels, marking the end of a legal challenge that threatened his tenure.
