Sorocaba, São Paulo, has confirmed its first human case of yellow fever in 2026, involving a 43-year-old man likely infected in Araçariguama. The city's last

The city of Sorocaba in São Paulo state has officially confirmed its first human case of yellow fever for the year 2026. The announcement was made by the local municipal government on Friday, May 8th.

The patient is identified as a 43-year-old man. According to the epidemiological investigation conducted by health authorities, the probable location where he contracted the disease was in the neighboring municipality of Araçariguama.

This marks a significant development for Sorocaba, as the last recorded instance of yellow fever in a human within the city limits dates back to 2019. The confirmation breaks a seven-year period without a locally reported human case.

The investigation also revealed the patient's travel history prior to the onset of illness. He had passed through several cities in the region, including Itu, Araçariguama, and Cabreúva. However, after a thorough review, the Local Probable Infection (LPI) was pinpointed to Araçariguama.

Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. It is important to note that while the source material mentions other mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue, zika, and chikungunya—which are transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito—yellow fever is typically spread by different species of mosquitoes, such as Aedes and Haemagogus, in sylvatic (jungle) cycles.

The confirmation of this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing presence of vector-borne diseases in certain regions of Brazil. Health officials consistently advise residents and visitors in risk areas to take precautions against mosquito bites and to stay informed about recommended vaccinations.
