Former Russia defender Alexander Anyukov explains why he turned down a call-up from coach Leonid Slutsky ahead of Euro 2016, citing personal reasons after

Former Russian international defender Alexander Anyukov has revealed the personal reasons behind his decision to decline a return to the national team setup ahead of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. In an exclusive interview, the veteran full-back explained that a call from then-manager Leonid Slutsky and his assistant Sergei Semak was not enough to change his mind.

The conversation reportedly took place just a few matches before the conclusion of the qualification campaign. Anyukov emphasized that he holds deep respect for Slutsky and had never previously refused a call-up during his active career. However, he described the decision as being driven by a "human, life factor" that went beyond footballing considerations.

"For me, patriotism is not an empty word," Anyukov stated. "But here, it was more about a personal, life decision. I simply knew that once I made my choice, I wouldn't change my mind. I believe they understood me."

Anyukov had officially retired from international football in 2013, concluding a distinguished career with the Sbornaya. Over his tenure, he earned 77 caps and scored eight goals, establishing himself as a reliable presence on the right side of defense.

The invitation to return came at a critical juncture for the Russian national team, which was finalizing its preparations for the European Championship in France. Despite the late attempt to bolster the squad, Anyukov remained firm in his retirement.

Russia ultimately competed in Group B at Euro 2016, facing England, Slovakia, and Wales. The team failed to advance beyond the group stage, finishing at the bottom of their section.

Anyukov's revelation provides insight into the behind-the-scenes dynamics and personal commitments that can influence a player's international career path, even when a major tournament beckons.
