Al Sadd
Founded in 1969 in the capital city of Doha, Al Sadd Sports Club is the most successful and decorated football club in Qatar. Established by a group of visionary young men, the club quickly became a cornerstone of Qatari football, embodying ambition and excellence from its inception. Its name, meaning "The Dam," symbolizes strength and resilience, qualities that have defined its journey. The club's home is the iconic Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, often referred to as "Al Sadd Stadium." This modern 15,000-seater venue, located in the Al Sadd district of Doha, has been a fortress for the team and a stage for numerous historic victories. It also hosted matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, showcasing its world-class facilities. Al Sadd's trophy cabinet is unparalleled in Qatar. The club has secured a record 16 Qatar Stars League (QSL) titles, with its most recent triumph in the 2021-22 season. Domestically, they have also won a record 18 Emir of Qatar Cups and multiple other cups. Internationally, Al Sadd is the only Qatari club to have won the AFC Champions League, achieving this feat twice—in 1989 and again in 2011. The 2011 victory earned them a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup, where they finished third. The club's identity is built on a foundation of technical, attacking football, often favoring possession-based play. This philosophy was famously embodied during the tenure of legendary Spanish midfielder Xavi Hernández, who played for Al Sadd from 2015 to 2019 before becoming its manager. Other iconic players include Qatari all-time top scorer Mansour Muftah, Algerian legend Rabah Madjer, and prolific striker Baghdad Bounedjah. Al Sadd boasts a passionate and loyal fanbase, known for their vibrant support at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium. The club's primary rivalry is with Al Arabi, a contest known as the "Qatar Clasico," which is one of the most fiercely contested derbies in the country. Currently, Al Sadd remains a dominant force in the Qatar Stars League, consistently challenging for the title and serving as a key supplier of talent to the Qatar national team. An interesting fact is that the club's crest features a dam, directly referencing its name, and its official anthem is a beloved part of the matchday experience for its supporters.
