Club America
Club América, known as "Las Águilas" (The Eagles), is a titan of Mexican and CONCACAF football, founded in Mexico City on October 12, 1916. The club was born from the merger of two local teams, "Récord" and "Colón," and was initially named "Centro Unión." The name was changed to Club América in 1918 to honor the continent and the club's ambition. Owned by the media conglomerate Televisa since the 1950s, América has become the most successful and one of the most polarizing clubs in Mexico. The team's home is the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, a colossal venue with a capacity of over 87,000. This legendary stadium has hosted two FIFA World Cup finals (1970, 1986) and is a fortress for the club. América's trophy cabinet is the most decorated in Mexican football, boasting a record 13 Liga MX titles, 6 Copa MX trophies, and a record 7 Campeón de Campeones cups. Internationally, they are a CONCACAF powerhouse, having won the CONCACAF Champions League (and its predecessors) a record seven times, including back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016. The club's identity is built on a tradition of attacking football and a "win-at-all-costs" mentality, often reflected in their aggressive transfer policy. Legendary players who have worn the iconic yellow and blue include Mexican icons like Cuauhtémoc Blanco, known for his creativity and passion; Hugo Sánchez, one of the greatest strikers in history; and Claudio López. The fan base, known as "La Monumental," is massive, passionate, and fiercely loyal, though the club's corporate backing and success also make it a target for widespread rivalry. The most intense rivalry in Mexican football is "El Súper Clásico" against Chivas de Guadalajara, pitting América's cosmopolitan, star-studded approach against Chivas' tradition of fielding only Mexican players. Currently, Club América remains a dominant force in Liga MX, consistently challenging for titles and maintaining its status as the benchmark for success in Mexican football. An interesting fact is that the club's founding date, October 12, coincides with Día de la Raza (Columbus Day), a date with significant historical symbolism in the Americas.
