Gremio
Founded in 1903 by a group of young men from Porto Alegre's upper class, Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, commonly known as Grêmio, is one of Brazil's most storied and successful football clubs. The club's identity is deeply intertwined with the city of Porto Alegre in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its home is the modern Arena do Grêmio, a 55,000-seat stadium inaugurated in 2012, which replaced the legendary Estádio Olímpico Monumental as the fortress of the *Tricolor*. Grêmio's history is decorated with major honours. Domestically, they have won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A twice (1981, 1996) and the Copa do Brasil a record five times. However, their legacy is most defined by continental glory. The club has won the prestigious Copa Libertadores three times (1983, 1995, 2017), placing them among the elite of South American football. Their 1983 triumph was capped by a legendary victory in the Intercontinental Cup, defeating Hamburg of Germany to be crowned world club champions. The club's playing style has historically been characterized by resilience, tactical organization, and a never-say-die attitude, often described as *gaúcho* grit. This identity has been embodied by legendary figures such as midfield maestro Ronaldinho Gaúcho, who began his career at Grêmio, prolific striker Renato Gaúcho (now a legendary manager), and iconic goalkeeper Danrlei. The passionate fanbase, known as the *Torcida do Grêmio*, is among the most devoted in Brazil, creating an intense atmosphere with their chants and the famous *Grito de Guerra* (War Cry). The club's greatest rivalry is the *Grenal*, one of the world's most heated derbies, against city rivals Sport Club Internacional. This clash divides Porto Alegre and is a defining feature of football in southern Brazil. Currently competing in the Série A, Grêmio continues to be a major force, blending its rich history with ambitions for future success. An interesting fact is that the club's founding date, September 15, is celebrated as *Dia do Gaúcho* (Gaucho Day) in the state, highlighting its cultural significance beyond football.
