Sassuolo
Founded in 1922 in the small town of Sassuolo, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio has undergone one of the most remarkable transformations in modern Italian football. For decades, the club languished in the lower tiers of the Italian league system, a provincial side with modest ambitions. The pivotal moment came in 2003 when the Mapei Group, a global leader in construction chemicals and a company with deep roots in the region, took control of the club. Under the visionary leadership of President Giorgio Squinzi, Sassuolo embarked on a meticulously planned ascent. The club's home is the Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore in nearby Reggio Emilia, a modern arena they share with Reggiana. This ground has witnessed their fairy-tale rise. The pinnacle of their domestic achievement was winning the Serie B title in 2012-13, securing their first-ever promotion to Serie A. They have since established themselves as a stable top-flight club, a remarkable feat for a town of just 40,000 inhabitants. Their greatest achievement on the European stage came in 2016-17 when they qualified for the UEFA Europa League, making their continental debut. Sassuolo's identity is built on a progressive, attacking style of play, often employing a fluid 4-3-3 formation. They are renowned for their excellent youth academy and shrewd transfer market strategy, developing and selling talented players for significant profit. Legendary figures include Domenico Berardi, the club's all-time top scorer and a product of their academy, alongside other icons like Francesco Magnanelli, the long-serving captain, and striker Simone Zaza. The team is affectionately known as the *Neroverdi* (Black and Greens) due to their distinctive striped jerseys. While their fanbase is smaller than Italy's traditional giants, it is fiercely loyal and has grown with the club's success. A notable rivalry exists with Modena, known as the "Derby of the Enza," reflecting the local geographical and historical tensions. Today, Sassuolo continues to compete in Serie A, embodying a model of sustainable growth and modern football management, forever changing the narrative of what a small-town club can achieve in the calcio landscape.
