Always Ready
Club Always Ready, founded on April 13, 1933, in the high-altitude city of La Paz, Bolivia, is one of the country’s most storied and resilient football institutions. The club’s name, “Always Ready,” was inspired by the military discipline and readiness of the Bolivian army, reflecting a never-say-die spirit that has defined its identity for nearly a century. From its earliest days, Always Ready became a symbol of working-class pride and local passion, playing its home matches at the Estadio Municipal de Villa Ingenio (also known as the Estadio de El Alto). However, the club’s most iconic home is the legendary Estadio Hernando Siles, a 42,000-seat cauldron perched at 3,637 meters above sea level, where it shares the pitch with fierce rivals Club Bolívar and The Strongest. El Alto, the sprawling city adjacent to La Paz, is considered the spiritual heart of the club, and the team’s base there has become a fortress where opponents often struggle to cope with the thin air and fervent support. Always Ready’s trophy cabinet boasts five Bolivian Primera División titles (1951, 1957, 1963, 2019–Apertura, 2020–Apertura) and numerous regional championships. Their 2019 and 2020 domestic league triumphs—coming after decades of near-misses—propelled them into the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition. Though they have yet to conquer the continent, their high-altitude home advantage has produced memorable upsets, including a stunning 3-0 victory over Brazilian giants Santos in 2021. The club’s playing style is traditionally aggressive and direct, capitalizing on the altitude to press high and tire visitors. Over the years, they have nurtured legendary figures such as Víctor Ugarte, one of Bolivia’s greatest forwards, and modern stars like Juan Carlos Arce and goalkeeper Carlos Lampe, who have donned the iconic red-and-white stripes. Fan culture at Always Ready is raw and passionate, with the “Brigada Verde” (Green Brigade) leading chants and displays that transform match days into electrifying spectacles. The club’s rivalries are intense, particularly the “Clásico de la Paz” against The Strongest—a derby that divides the city along historical and social lines—and a long-standing enmity with Bolívar. Interestingly, Always Ready is one of the few Bolivian clubs to have been founded by military officers, and its logo features a stoic eagle—symbolizing vigilance and ambition. After a brief spell in lower divisions, the club returned to the top flight in 2018 and has since reestablished itself as a consistent contender. As of 2025, Always Ready continues to compete in the Bolivian Primera División, battling for domestic glory while seeking to make deeper inroads into international tournaments—always ready, indeed, for the next challenge.
