Derry City Football Club, founded in 1928 in the historic walled city of Derry (officially Londonderry), Northern Ireland, holds a unique place in football history as the only club from Northern Ireland to play in the Republic of Ireland's League of Ireland. The club was established by local businessmen and soccer enthusiasts, initially playing in the Irish League of Northern Ireland. However, due to political tensions and security concerns during the Troubles, Derry City was forced to withdraw from the Irish League in 1972.
