Founded on August 12, 1946, through the merger of two local clubs, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria, the new entity adopted a name blending the two predecessors and a crest featuring a sailor, symbolizing the city's maritime heritage. The club's iconic blue shirts with white, red, and black horizontal bands earned them the nickname "blucerchiati" (blue-circled).
