Gus Atkinson failed a concussion test after being struck by Josh Tongue bouncers, jeopardizing his England Test selection for the New Zealand series.

Surrey's fast bowling prospect Gus Atkinson has been dealt a significant blow to his England Test ambitions after failing a concussion test following a hostile spell from Nottinghamshire and England teammate Josh Tongue. The incident occurred during the County Championship clash at Trent Bridge, where Tongue's short-pitched barrage forced Atkinson to retire hurt and eventually be substituted out of the match.

Atkinson, who is widely tipped to feature in England's first Test against New Zealand starting June 4, was struck on the helmet by two spiteful bouncers from Tongue. Despite initially continuing his innings for nearly an hour, the Surrey paceman later left the field and was replaced by Reece Topley. Under concussion protocols, Atkinson is now ruled out of Surrey's next fixture against Yorkshire, which would have been his final red-ball opportunity before linking up with the England squad.

The injury not only affects Surrey's immediate plans but also raises questions about Atkinson's readiness for the Test summer. Both bowlers were expected to lead England's pace attack in the New Zealand series, but Tongue's aggressive bowling might have inadvertently harmed his teammate's chances. Tongue finished with four wickets for 89 runs, while Dan Lawrence’s century (104) helped Surrey reach 449 and secure a first-innings lead of 34.

Elsewhere in Division One, Essex completed a six-wicket victory over bottom side Hampshire at Chelmsford. Matt Critchley's blistering 90 not out off 73 balls, featuring 15 fours, guided Essex home after they were set 177 to win. Simon Harmer's four-wicket haul had earlier dismissed Hampshire for 214 in their second innings.

Warwickshire are on the verge of a comprehensive win over Yorkshire at Edgbaston. Sam Hain's unbeaten 164 propelled the Bears to 553 for six declared, leaving Yorkshire a target of 549. Ethan Bamber’s early strikes reduced Yorkshire to 98 for five at stumps, with Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow falling cheaply. The hosts need just five more wickets on the final day.

Glamorgan are in trouble against Somerset at Cardiff, slipping from 81 without loss to 140 for five in pursuit of 283. Asa Tribe, an England hopeful, made his third half-century of the season but was among the casualties. Ollie Robinson bowled Australia opener Jake Weatherald as Leicestershire reached 154 for four against Sussex, leading by 52.

In Division Two, table-toppers Durham secured their third win of the season after Worcestershire's dramatic collapse. Callum Parkinson took five for 13, supported by England Test captain Ben Stokes (2 for 33), as Worcestershire slumped from 53 for none to 102 all out. Ben McKinney (87 not out) and Emilio Gay (51 not out) then guided Durham to a nine-wicket victory.

Lancashire suffered a second defeat of 2026, collapsing from 48 for three to 84 all out against Middlesex. The visitors chased down a modest 117 with six wickets to spare. Gloucestershire captain Cameron Bancroft's 83 helped his side build a 249-run lead against Kent, while Northamptonshire were forced to follow on after Derbyshire posted 604 for seven declared.

The concussion substitution rule, introduced in recent years, ensures player safety but has tactical implications for teams. Surrey will now have to adjust their bowling plans without Atkinson, who has been a key performer. For England, the timing is particularly unfortunate, as the selectors were likely to include both Atkinson and Tongue in the Test squad. Tongue's performance, though impressive, may have come at a cost to his teammate.

Atkinson will now undergo further assessments, but his availability for the Yorkshire match is already ruled out. The England medical team will monitor his recovery ahead of the New Zealand series. With the first Test just weeks away, Atkinson's chances of featuring are now in serious doubt, opening the door for other fast bowlers to stake their claim.
