San Lorenzo
Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, affectionately known as "Los Cuervos" (The Crows) or "El Ciclón" (The Cyclone), is a storied Argentine football institution founded on April 1, 1908, in the Boedo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The club's origin is famously tied to a group of young men playing football in a vacant lot, who were approached by a priest, Lorenzo Massa, concerned about them playing in the streets near his church. He offered them the church's patio as a pitch, and in gratitude, they named the club after him. San Lorenzo's home is the Estadio Pedro Bidegain, commonly known as "El Nuevo Gasómetro," a modern 47,000-capacity stadium in the Bajo Flores district. This venue replaced their legendary original ground, "El Gasómetro," in Boedo, which was sold under controversial circumstances during the military dictatorship in 1979, a wound still felt by the fanbase. The club's trophy cabinet is impressive, featuring 15 Argentine Primera División titles, including the historic 2001 Clausura and 2007 Clausura championships. Their crowning international achievement came in 2014, when they won the Copa Libertadores, defeating Nacional of Paraguay in the final. They also won the Copa Sudamericana in 2002. San Lorenzo has been graced by legendary players such as prolific striker Héctor "El Bambino" Veira, midfield maestro Roberto Telch, and modern icons like Ángel Correa and Gonzalo Bergessio. The club is renowned for its passionate, working-class fanbase, known for their fervent support and distinctive black-and-red colors. Their identity is built on resilience and a never-say-die attitude. A defining rivalry is the "Clásico Porteño" with neighbors Club Atlético Huracán. Currently competing in Argentina's top flight, San Lorenzo continues to be a major force. An interesting fact is that Pope Francis, Jorge Bergoglio, is a lifelong, devoted member of the club, famously celebrating their Libertadores victory.
