World No. 4 Coco Gauff discusses her mindset for defending her Roland Garros title, stating she feels less internal pressure than before the 2024 US Open. She views the tournament as a fresh opportunity rather than a defense.

American tennis star Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion and the current world No. 4, has opened up about her approach to defending her title at the upcoming Roland Garros 2026 tournament. Speaking at a press conference during the Rome event, Gauff shared a notably relaxed perspective on the challenge ahead.

Gauff explained that the internal pressure she feels heading into the French Open is significantly less intense than what she experienced before the 2024 US Open. She characterized the emotional weight as being "noticeably smaller" this time around, indicating a shift in her mental preparation and outlook.

The young champion elaborated on her evolved mindset, stating that she now views the concept of "defending a title" as somewhat meaningless. For Gauff, each tournament season represents a new and distinct opportunity, where any player in the draw has a legitimate chance to lift the trophy. This philosophical shift appears to have liberated her from the burden of expectation.

"I realized that defending a title in some sense means nothing. Every year is a new opportunity, and anyone can win," Gauff stated. She expressed her hope that she would be the one to triumph again but emphasized that she no longer frames the event as a "title defense." This represents a clear departure from her previous approach.

Gauff recalled her experience at the US Open, where she felt consumed by the narrative of having to "defend, defend, defend." That repetitive pressure, she suggested, was counterproductive. Now, she consciously reframes Roland Garros as simply another major tournament on the calendar, albeit one where she has fond memories of past success.

"At the US Open, I thought: 'I have to defend, defend, defend...' Now I see it as just another tournament. I won it last year and I'll try to do it again," Gauff explained. She also added a touch of humor and humility, acknowledging the immense challenge of sustained dominance. "I won't be able to defend the title every year. I'm not Rafa (Rafael Nadal), maybe someday (laughs)," she quipped, referencing the King of Clay's legendary streak at the event.

Gauff's comments suggest a mature and sustainable approach to managing the pressures of being a reigning champion. By focusing on the present opportunity rather than the past achievement, she aims to compete with a clearer mind and greater freedom on the court at Roland Garros.
