The opportunity first arose when Gauff's coaching staff reached out to Vatutin earlier in the year. They inquired about his availability to travel with the team for certain tournaments, specifically asking if he could join them for a week during the Stuttgart event. Vatutin agreed to the short-term arrangement, fitting it into his own schedule before his own tournament commitments resumed.
The collaboration did not end there. Towards the end of the 2024 season, Gauff's team contacted Vatutin again with a more substantial proposal. They invited him to travel to Florida for a three-week pre-season training block in December. Upon learning about his stint with Gauff, Vatutin's current primary training partner, rising star Mirra Andreeva, had a lighthearted reaction. "Mirra saw this and gave me a little bit of a hard time about it," Vatutin shared with a smile.
