19-year-old Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca, ranked 29th, discusses managing expectations and pressure, emphasizing he plays for himself. He faces the winner of Medjedovic vs. Royer in Rome.

At just 19 years old, Brazilian tennis sensation Joao Fonseca has already reached a career-high ranking of 29 in the world. With such rapid ascent comes immense pressure and lofty comparisons, something the young athlete has had to learn to navigate.

In a recent interview with Ubitennis, Fonseca opened up about the early challenges of managing external expectations. He revealed that many people seemed to anticipate he would become the next Roger Federer almost immediately, a burden that was initially difficult to bear.

"Honestly, it was tough at the beginning," Fonseca admitted. "I felt pressure from everyone, all the expectations. It seemed like people thought I would almost overnight become the next Roger Federer. That's not how it works."

The young Brazilian explained that he struggled to process these comparisons and the weight of anticipation. However, he has since developed a healthier perspective on his career and public perception.

"I tried to understand all of it, but it was hard," he continued. "Now I think I've realized that I'm only playing for myself, that I don't owe anyone anything and I'm not playing for others."

Fonseca's next challenge comes at the prestigious Italian Open in Rome, a Masters-level tournament. He is set to compete in the second round against the winner of the match between Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic and France's Valentin Royer.

The tournament represents another opportunity for the talented teenager to continue his impressive rise in professional tennis while maintaining the mental clarity he has worked hard to achieve.
