Senne Lammens made four saves as Sunderland dominated but couldn't break down a Manchester United side missing Benjamin Sesko in a 0-0 draw.

Michael Carrick's Manchester United were brought back down to earth after a goalless draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Just a week after a thrilling victory over Liverpool secured Champions League qualification, United struggled to find their rhythm, making five changes from that high-intensity clash.

Sunderland dominated the first half, creating numerous chances. Senne Lammens was forced into action early, making a crucial save to deny Brian Brobbey in the 11th minute. The Sunderland striker also fired across the face of goal as the hosts piled on pressure. A penalty appeal for handball against Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo was waved away.

United missed injured striker Benjamin Sesko, and his replacement Joshua Zirkzee failed to make an impact before being substituted after 65 minutes. Mason Mount started in midfield but also had a quiet afternoon. The visitors' only shot on target came in second-half stoppage time, when Matheus Cunha fired straight at Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs from 12 yards.

The draw was the 27th goalless stalemate in the Premier League this season, equaling the total from the previous two campaigns combined. Sunderland attempted 15 shots, their joint-highest in a league match this season. Lammens' four saves matched his best in a clean sheet performance.

Despite the underwhelming display, Carrick remains the favorite for the permanent managerial role. He has transformed United's fortunes since taking over in January, but this match highlighted the work needed to restore the club to the elite level. A draw was perhaps a fair result given United's improved second-half showing, but it was a stark contrast to the vintage Ferguson-era performances.
