Team profile
Toronto FC
Toronto FC, often known as TFC, is a professional soccer club based in Toronto, Ontario, and a founding member of Major League Soccer's Canadian expansion. Established in 2006 as the league's first Canadian franchise, the club made its debut in 2007, igniting a passionate football culture in a city historically dominated by hockey. The team's name and iconic red, grey, and white colors pay homage to the city's heritage, with the "FC" standing for Football Club. The club plays its home matches at BMO Field, a 30,000-seat soccer-specific stadium located at Exhibition Place on the shores of Lake Ontario. The intimate, often raucous atmosphere has become a fortress for the team and a centerpiece of its identity. Toronto FC's early years were a struggle, but the arrival of designated players like Torsten Frings and later, Italian star Sebastian Giovinco, marked a turning point. Giovinco, known as "The Atomic Ant," became a club legend, winning the MLS MVP and Golden Boot in 2015. The club's golden era arrived in 2017, when it achieved an unprecedented domestic treble. Under coach Greg Vanney and led by captain Michael Bradley and striker Jozy Altidore, TFC won the Canadian Championship, the Supporters' Shield for the best regular-season record, and the MLS Cup, defeating the Seattle Sounders in a dramatic final. This remains the pinnacle of the club's history. They also reached the CONCACAF Champions League final in 2018. Toronto FC's identity is built on a passionate fan base, with supporters' groups like the Red Patch Boys and U-Sector creating a vibrant, tifo-filled atmosphere at BMO Field. The club's primary rivalry is with the Montreal Impact (now CF Montréal), known as the "401 Derby," one of the most intense in MLS. Another significant rivalry exists with the Vancouver Whitecaps, forming the Canadian Classique. Currently, the club is in a rebuilding phase, seeking to recapture its former glory after a period of decline. Despite recent challenges, Toronto FC remains a cornerstone of Canadian soccer, having produced national team talent and consistently drawn large crowds. An interesting fact is that the club's first-ever goal was scored by Danny Dichio, a moment still celebrated by fans annually.
