Corinthians
Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, universally known as Corinthians or simply "Timão" (The Big Team), is a Brazilian footballing institution founded on September 1, 1910, in the city of São Paulo. The club's origin is a remarkable story of popular inspiration; its founders, a group of railway workers, were so impressed by a visiting English amateur team, Corinthian FC, that they decided to name their new club in its honor. This humble, working-class beginning forged an identity deeply connected to the people of São Paulo, a bond that remains the club's core. The team plays its home matches at the Neo Química Arena, a modern 49,205-capacity stadium built for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and located in the Itaquera district of São Paulo. Corinthians' history is decorated with major honours, including multiple Brasileirão Série A titles and a record number of Copa do Brasil victories. On the continental stage, they have twice conquered South America, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2012. That same year, they achieved global glory by defeating Chelsea to win the FIFA Club World Cup, cementing their status as world champions. The club's legendary players reflect its ethos of grit and flair. The philosophical midfielder Sócrates, a leader of the "Democracia Corinthiana" movement, remains an eternal icon. Other greats include the prolific striker Ronaldo, midfield maestro Rincón, and modern-day heroes like goalkeeper Cássio and midfielder Renato Augusto. Corinthians' playing style has traditionally emphasized a strong, physical defense combined with passionate, attacking football, embodying the "raça" (fighting spirit) demanded by its fans. The fan base, known as the "Fiel" (The Faithful), is one of the largest and most passionate in the world, renowned for creating an intimidating atmosphere. Their fierce rivalry with Palmeiras, known as the "Derby Paulista," is one of the most heated in global football. Currently competing in the Brasileirão Série A, Corinthians remains a perennial contender, driven by its massive support and historic legacy. An interesting fact is the club's unique "mosaic" fan displays, where thousands of fans hold up colored cards to create stunning visual spectacles in the stands.
