Cruzeiro
Founded in 1921 as *Società Sportiva Palestra Itália* by Italian immigrants in Belo Horizonte, the club was forced to change its name to Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in 1942 during World War II, adopting the Portuguese word for the Southern Cross constellation. This celestial identity became central to its mythology. Home is the colossal Mineirão stadium, a cathedral of Brazilian football that hosted the 2014 World Cup semi-final, where Cruzeiro's passionate fans, known as *A Raposa* (The Fox), create an intimidating atmosphere. Cruzeiro's history is studded with silverware. They are four-time Brazilian champions (Série A) and have won the prestigious Copa do Brasil a record six times. Their golden era in the 1960s saw them win five consecutive state titles and reach the Copa Libertadores final. The club achieved legendary status by winning the continental double—the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian league—in 2003, a feat they repeated in 2013 and 2014, cementing their modern legacy. The club has been graced by legendary players, including the brilliant 1960s striker Tostão, midfield maestro Alex, and a young Ronaldo Nazário, who began his meteoric rise at the club. Cruzeiro's identity is built on a technical, attacking style, often reflecting the flair of its star players. Their fan culture is fiercely loyal, with one of the largest supporter bases in Brazil. The rivalry with city neighbor Atlético Mineiro, known as the *Clássico das Multidões* (Derby of the Masses), is one of the most intense in the country. After a period of severe financial crisis that led to relegation in 2019, Cruzeiro is currently rebuilding, having returned to the top-flight Série A in 2022 and aiming to restore its former glory.
