Everton
Founded in 1878 as St. Domingo FC, Everton is one of the oldest and most storied clubs in English football. Renamed Everton Football Club in 1879, the club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888 and has spent more seasons in the top flight than any other club. Their early history is famously intertwined with that of their fierce rivals, Liverpool FC, which was formed by a faction of Everton officials following a dispute over rent at their then-home, Anfield. The club is based in the city of Liverpool and has called Goodison Park home since 1892, a traditional and atmospheric ground known for its close proximity to the pitch. A new era is dawning with the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, set to be one of the most iconic venues in the Premier League. Everton’s trophy cabinet is a testament to their historic pedigree. They have been crowned champions of England nine times, with their most recent league title coming in the 1986-87 season. The club has also won the FA Cup five times, with their last triumph in 1995, and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985. This success was built on a reputation for stylish, attacking football, often embodied by the club’s motto, *Nil Satis Nisi Optimum* ("Nothing but the best is good enough"). The Toffees have been graced by legendary players such as Dixie Dean, who scored a record 60 league goals in the 1927-28 season; the "Holy Trinity" midfield of Alan Ball, Howard Kendall, and Colin Harvey; and modern icons like Duncan Ferguson, Tim Cahill, and Wayne Rooney, who burst onto the scene as a prodigious teenager. Everton’s identity is deeply rooted in its community as the "People's Club," with a passionate and loyal fanbase known for their resilience and unwavering support. The Merseyside derby against Liverpool is one of the most historic and fiercely contested rivalries in world football, characterized by its unique blend of intense competition and familial connection across the city. Currently competing in the Premier League, Everton is navigating a challenging period, aiming to stabilize and build for the future with their new stadium on the horizon. An interesting fact is that Everton's nickname, "The Toffees," is linked to a toffee shop located near their original Anfield ground, with the "Toffee Lady" tradition still observed on matchdays.
