Cuore di Midlothian
Heart of Midlothian Football Club, affectionately known as Hearts, is a cornerstone of Scottish football, founded in 1874 in the heart of Edinburgh. The club's name derives from the historic Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the Royal Mile, near where the original club members played. Their journey began in the Meadows before settling at Tynecastle Park in 1886, a ground that remains their fortress to this day. Located in the Gorgie area of the city, Tynecastle is renowned for its intimate, intimidating atmosphere, with the modern main stand completed in 2017. Hearts' history is decorated with significant silverware. They have been crowned Scottish champions four times (1894–95, 1896–97, 1957–58, and 1959–60), with the late 1950s team, known as the "Terrible Trio" of Willie Bauld, Alfie Conn, and Jimmy Wardhaugh, being particularly legendary. The club has won the Scottish Cup eight times, with their 1998 victory being a famous triumph over Rangers. They have also lifted the Scottish League Cup four times. On the European stage, Hearts have competed in the UEFA Cup/Europa League and the Cup Winners' Cup, with a notable run to the UEFA Cup group stage in 2004-05. The club's identity is built on a passionate, working-class support and a fierce rivalry with Hibernian FC, their cross-city neighbours. The Edinburgh derby is one of the most intense in world football. Legendary figures include record goalscorer John Robertson, the elegant playmaker Rudi Skácel, and modern icons like captain Steven Naismith. Hearts are known for their resilient, often direct style of play, reflecting the gritty determination of their fanbase. Currently, Hearts are a stable force in the Scottish Premiership, consistently challenging for European qualification spots. A fascinating fact is that the club was briefly owned by a supporters' consortium, the Foundation of Hearts, which saved it from administration in 2014, highlighting the deep bond between the team and its community. Their maroon jerseys are one of the most iconic kits in the Scottish game.
